Simple & Crunchy Chicken Yakitori for kids - Tested till perfect

This is something that kids love to eat. While making this, as I always say get your kids involved, they would love to help you and it also gets them interested in cooking :)

Ingredients

1/4 Cup of soy sauce
3 cloves garlic
1-inch piece fresh ginger-root, grated or very finely chopped
1 tablespoon honey
pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch strips
2 cups cone-flakes(If you prefer you could also use 1 cup crushed bite-size cheese crackers & 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs)

Method

  • Lay the bamboo skewers in a shallow pan and pour cold water over them. Let them soak for about an hour. This is so they won't burn in the oven later on.
  • Combine the soy sauce, garlic, ginger-root, honey, salt, and sesame oil in the bowl. Stir until the honey disappears. This is the marinade.
  • Pour the marinade into one of the plastic bags. Add the chicken breasts and close the bag tightly. Gently shank the bag until all the chicken is coated with the marinade. Put the bag in the refrigerator for 30 min.
  • Preheat the oven for 350 degrees F.
  • Put the cornflakes in another plastic bag. Use your hands or a rolling pin to crush the cereal. Don't make the pieces too small. Pour the crumbs onto the plate or another shallow container.(If you prefer you could also use 1 cup crushed bite-size cheese crackers & 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs)
  • After the chicken has marinated for 30 min, take the bag out of the refrigerator, hold it over the sink, open the bag just a tiny bit, and pour out the marinade.
  •  Next, thread the chicken strips onto the skewers. This is sort of like weaving. Holding up the pointy part of the skewer push one end of the chicken strip onto the skewer. Move the chicken strip down a little and then push the skewer down it again. Repeat this until you have most of the skewer with chicken.
  • Roll the skewered chicken in the cornflake crumbs. Gently pat the crumbs onto any of the chicken that doesn't get covered.
  • Cover the cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Place the skewers on the foil so all the handles are in a line. Take another piece of foil and cover the ends of the skewers so that they don't burn.
  • Place the sheet in the oven and bake until the chicken is cooked through and golden brown (You could also apply butter on top to make it more crispy). It takes about 10 minutes to be done.

Note:

If you would like you could also include pineapple, onion, green bell pepper etc along with your chicken onto the skewers. It would taste delicious.

ENJOY!
